Hi Reader,

I hope you’re having an awesome day. I know helping a young reader can be challenging at times so I wanted to drop by and share a few, simple ways you can help your reader grow.

1. Listen​
   I know it is tempting to help or tell your child when a word is wrong, but be sure to stop and listen. Give your child a chance to think and figure out the unknown word independently.

2. Don’t allow your child to sound out every word
   ​Many children are taught to sound out words, and this is okay in some cases. However, there are many words in the English language that aren’t read the way that they appear. Your child will need other strategies to figure out these words. Try asking your child to think about a word that would make sense in the sentence or look at smaller parts of the word.
   ​
3. Praise​
   Don’t forget to praise successes when your child completes a text. This will help build confidence, and reading will be associated with positivity. Your reader will look forward to seeing and hearing your excitement.
